What is Reuse

Zero Waste Europe | 2022

Citizens, municipalities and businesses across Europe are calling for reusable packaging to be scaled up and for robust reuse systems to be put in place. Even though the concept of reuse is high on the public agenda, it is sometimes used interchangeably with other concepts such as recycling. So what is reuse? Find out more in #WeChoooseReuse's guide to the reuse revolution!

Brand Audit 2022

Break Free From Plastic | 2022

The mission with our brand annual audit is to identify the world’s top polluting corporations. By gathering data on plastic waste collected at community cleanups around the world, brand audits allow us to challenge the plastic industry and demand real solutions. Our reports have revealed that the true driving forces of the plastic pollution crisis are the corporations producing all this plastic in the first place.

Making Europe transition to reusable packaging

Zero Waste Europe | 2022

The clear limitations of single-use packaging are being exposed, and reusable packaging is now standing high on the agenda of policy-makers and key market players. This report aims at bringing the evidence needed (from a quantitative and qualitative aspect) for determining the product categories that are most suitable for the transition of some packaging from single-use to reusable options.

Synthetics Anonymous

Changing Markets Foundation | 2021

This report investigates the behaviour of some of the biggest fashion brands and retailers regarding their use of synthetic fibres and transparency about doing so. Our findings not only expose fashion brands’ heavy addiction to synthetics but also demonstrate rampant greenwashing across their voluntary commitments and products, with as much as 59% of green claims for the products we assessed being unsubstantiated or misleading.

Detection of microplastics in human lung tissue using μFTIR spectroscopy

Lauren C. Jenner, Jeanette M. Rotchell, Robert T. Bennett, Michael Cowen, Vasileios Tentzeris, Laura R. Sadofsky | 2022

The study demonstrates the highest level of contamination control and reports unadjusted values alongside different contamination adjustment techniques. These results support inhalation as a route of exposure for environmental MPs, and this characterisation of types and levels can now inform realistic conditions for laboratory exposure experiments, with the aim of determining health impacts.

Raman Microspectroscopy Detection and Characterisation of Microplastics in Human Breastmilk

Antonio Ragusa, Valentina Notarstefano, Alessandro Svelato, Alessia Belloni, Giorgia Gioacchini, Christine Blondeel, Emma Zucchelli, Caterina De Luca, Sara D’Avino, Alessandra Gulotta, Oliana Carnevali, and Elisabetta Giorgini | 2022

In this pilot single-centre observational prospective study, human breastmilk samples collected from N. 34 women were analysed by Raman Microspectroscopy, and, for the first time, MP contamination was found in 26 out of 34 samples

Microplastics detected in cirrhotic liver tissue

Thomas Horvatits, Matthias Tamminga, Beibei Liu, Marcial Sebode, Antonella Carambia, Lutz Fischer, Klaus Püschel, Samuel Huber, Elke Kerstin Fischer | 2022

The contamination of ecosystem compartments by microplastics (MPs) is an ubiquitous problem. MPs have been observed in mice tissues, and recently in human blood, stool and placenta. However, two aspects remain unclear: whether MPs accumulate in peripheral organs, specifically in the liver, and if liver cirrhosis favours this process. We aimed to examine human liver tissue samples to determine whether MPs accumulate in the liver.

Andreas Kortenkamp, Martin Scholze, Sibylle Ermler, Lærke Priskorn, Niels Jørgensen, Anna-Maria Andersson, Hanne Frederiksen | 2022

Semen quality in men continues to decline in Western countries, but the contours of the issue remain obscure, in relation to contributing chemicals.
