The first Reuse Day in China was successfully held in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, with the aim to advocate reuse, reduce plastic waste and cut carbon emissions.

Geneva, Switzerland – The resumed fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) for a global agreement to end plastic pollution has adjourned after a haphazard process that extended the negotiations for an extra day, but ended without a clear agreement on the path forward. Civil society urges world leaders to persevere towards a strong, legally binding treaty that cuts plastic production and protects human health, human rights, and the environment. 

Today at 2:50 pm, Luis Vayas Valdivieso, Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meeting for a Plastics Treaty, released a new text for negotiations. The proposal lacks all the key components that civil society groups and high ambition countries have been asking for to effectively address the plastic pollution crisis. 

Civil society organizations from Southeast Asia which are pushing for an ambitious and effective treaty see negotiators "trading away health and future generations in favour of an easy path to a weak treaty." Below is their press release.

Four days into the final Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, we are not on track to deliver a treaty that will protect people and nature. Enough is enough; something must change.
