Tunisian Environmental Activist, Semia Gharbi, wins 2025 Goldman Prize for challenging waste trafficking between Italy and Tunisia

Between May and July 2020, Italian company Sviluppo Risorse Ambientali, based in Polla, Italy, shipped 282 containers of mixed municipal waste (including household waste) across the Mediterranean to Soreplast, a Tunisian company. Semia and her colleagues at Réseau Tunisie Verte supported the government’s response and persuaded officials to return the 282 containers of illegal, non-recyclable waste to Italy.

Break Free From Plastic Condemns North Dakota Court Ruling Against Greenpeace as an Attack on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Environmental Defenders, Free Speech, and Justice

Break Free From Plastic (BFFP), a global movement envisioning a future free from plastic pollution, strongly condemns the recent ruling by a North Dakota court that found Greenpeace, a member of BFFP, liable for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages in favor of Energy Transfer and its Dakota Access Pipeline project, stressing that the decision represents a blatant attack on environmental defenders, a threat to Indigenous Peoples’ rights, environmental justice, and a dangerous erosion of the right to free speech and peaceful protest.
