While Corporations Stall on Plastic Waste, a Flood-Prone Barangay in the Philippines Is Cleaning Up the Mess

For decades, Potrero, the largest barangay (town) in Malabon City in the northern part of Metro Manila, Philippines, lived with the harsh consequences of plastic pollution. Wedged along the Tullahan River, a catch basin for waste flowing from Bulacan, Quezon City, and Caloocan, the barangay endured floods so severe that residents climbed onto rooftops for safety.

Making the invisible visible: how researchers are using cartoons to explain the hidden harms of plastic pollution

Plastic pollution requires scientific research to guide effective solutions. The French research group GDR collaborated with scriptwriter Capucine Dupuy and illustrator Bobika to turn their findings into humorous, accessible cartoons - a collaboration we discussed with Professor Mathieu George and Capucine Dupuy.

Nigeria Brand Audit

Across 8 cities and 7 states, nine #BreakFreeFromPlastic Nigerian member organizations embarked on a nationwide plastic brand audit between 2018 to 2024, auditing 298,174 pieces of plastic waste, exposing the dominance of sachets, plastic bottles, and major multinational polluters such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo in Nigeria’s plastic waste streams.
