Zero-Waste Routes: A Regional Initiative to Highlight Examples of Reuse and Sustainable Waste Management

With the goal of strengthening and raising awareness of local initiatives that promote waste prevention and responsible waste management, the Zero Waste Routes initiative selected a series of in-person tours organized by local organizations in various Latin American countries.

OUR GOAL

Bring systemic change through a holistic approach tackling plastic pollution across the whole plastics value chain, focusing on prevention rather than cure, and providing effective solutions.

In El Salvador, plastic is everywhere: in shopping, homes, and farmlands, but also on the streets and in storm drains, where it accumulates when the rains come. In the face of a “use-and-dispose” culture, the Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technology (CESTA in Spaish)—the country’s first environmental organization—has spent more than two decades promoting a different approach to waste management and, for the past ten years, has been linking that effort to the global Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) movement.

Across 8 cities and 7 states, nine #BreakFreeFromPlastic Nigerian member organizations embarked on a nationwide plastic brand audit between 2018 to 2024, auditing 298,174 pieces of plastic waste, exposing the dominance of sachets, plastic bottles, and major multinational polluters such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo in Nigeria’s plastic waste streams.
