May 12, 2025 — Today, the UN Special Rapporteur on Toxics and Human Rights, Marcos Orellana, published a letter sent to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, a UK partner of The Coca-Cola Company, on March 12, raising concerns over the company’s packaging practices in Samoa, after the company’s decision to switch from reusable glass bottles to disposable […]
Civil society perseveres in the face of a deeply flawed Plastics Treaty negotiations process and demands that countries take decisive action
Despite a lack of space for interventions and restricted access throughout the process, Indigenous Peoples, frontline and fenceline communities, waste pickers, workers, scientists, and civil society have consistently brought their views into the heart of these corporate-heavy negotiations. Their knowledge, experience, and expertise have been instrumental in shifting the narrative on plastic pollution from a […]
Geneva, Switzerland – The resumed fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) for a global agreement to end plastic pollution has adjourned after a haphazard process that extended the negotiations for an extra day, but ended without a clear agreement on the path forward. Civil society urges world leaders to persevere towards a strong, legally binding treaty that cuts plastic production and protects human health, human rights, and the environment.
Civil society organizations from Southeast Asia which are pushing for an ambitious and effective treaty see negotiators "trading away health and future generations in favour of an easy path to a weak treaty." Below is their press release.
Four days into the final Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, we are not on track to deliver a treaty that will protect people and nature. Enough is enough; something must change. We are joining the voices of waste pickers, frontline communities, scientists, healthcare professionals, children and youth, women, businesses, and non-governmental organisations around the world, calling on governments to step up. Fix the process, keep your promise, and finalise a meaningful treaty to end plastic pollution.
Industry presence threatens plastics treaty integrity at INC-5.2 as 234 lobbyists affiliated with the fossil fuel and petrochemicals industry registered to participate at the resumed fifth round of negotiations for a global legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution. The following press release was originally published by the Center for International Environmental Law on www.ciel.org.
