EUROPEAN UNION ELECTIONS | JUNE 6-9, 2024

EUROPEAN UNION ELECTIONS | JUNE 6-9, 2024

The next European Union Elections are scheduled to take place between 6 and 9 June 2024. EU citizens will turn to the ballot boxes to decide which Members of the European Parliament (MEP’s) will represent and advocate for the concerns of constituents at the EU level.

Europe is one of the largest producers and consumers of plastics worldwide. If we want the EU to tackle the plastics crisis, then we need a European Commision and  European Parliament that is committed to delivering real solutions to protect people and the planet.

Join the #BreakFreeFromPlastic EU Elections Campaign to call for a new EU Government that prioritises the reduction of plastic production, tackles plastic pollution and gives precedence to the health and safety of people and planet.

Legacy plastics that fragment into persistent microplastics and contaminate the ocean, land, and atmosphere, with detrimental effects on marine food webs and human health, are overlooked in the Global #PlasticsTreaty, a commentary finds.

Even an 80% reduction in plastic inputs by 2040 would not reverse microplastic accumulation, as existing plastics continue to degrade.

Authors suggest combining waste reduction with aggressive removal of existing debris could stabilise microplastic contamination and reduce its impact on ecosystems and food webs. The commentary underscores the urgent need for integrated strategies to address both new and existing pollution, ensuring long-term environmental and human health benefits.

Reposted breakfreefromplastic Coca-Cola’s greenwashing has been exposed 🚨

Coca-Cola has quietly scrapped its 2022 promise to have 25% of its drinks in reusable packaging by 2030, opting instead for using recycled plastic.

Despite their claims of sustainability, Coca-Cola remains one of the world’s top plastic polluters. Recycling doesn’t solve the issue of plastic waste when single-use items still dominate the market and pollute our planet. 🌍

By abandoning their reusable packaging goal, Coca-Cola is a prime example of greenwashing—making superficial environmental claims while continuing harmful practices. How can we trust a company that can’t even stick to its own low-bar commitments?

With Plastics Treaty negotiations going into 2025, this should provide proof as to why companies need to be held accountable for plastic pollution. It serves as a reminder as to why we need mandatory regulations that prioritises the scaling up of reusable packaging systems and plastic production reduction measures.

Last week, over 200 nations gathered in South Korea for what was intended to be the final push toward a treaty to tackle plastics pollution.

We were a bit hopeful! Yet, despite the urgency, no agreement was reached.

The key sticking point? Whether to commit to cutting how much plastic is produced, or just try and reduce plastic waste by increasing recycling efforts.

In light of these meetings, we recorded a special episode of Fossil vs Future. For the first time ever, we're joined by a guest: Aidan Charron from earthdaynetwork!

🥤 WHAT ABOUT PLASTICS? 🐠 A lifesaving innovation or a threat to our planet and health?

📄Traité Plastique : {Pas d’Accord, mais beaucoup de parenthèses}

The conclusion of #INC5 was a pivotal event, during which the world anticipated unveiling the first-ever #plasticstreaty designed to end #plasticpollution, curb excessive #plasticproduction, and eliminate the most harmful #plasticchemicals and products. However, progress has been postponed, and delayed by a few obstructionist countries operating under the guise of the "so-called" spirit of compromise.

The urgency remains as pressing as ever. Time is not on our side, and as we move from one version of the text to the next, #plastics continue to infiltrate, poison, and harm our people, planet, and children.

Greenpeace International activists challenged the plastics industry during critical final #PlasticsTreaty talks in South Korea by boarding a tanker waiting to load TOXIC plastic chemicals.
200 Km away in Busan, UN talks are at a critical moment and we must do everything in our power to push world leaders to stand up for a strong treaty that cuts plastic production.
That’s why courageous activists climbed aboard the tanker to peacefully prevent it from loading this shipment until world leaders step up & show the same courage — by delivering a strong treaty that cuts plastic production for people & planet.
Share this post to tell governments to cut plastic production, not the treaty’s ambition!
