This role provides US-focused movement support, organizes capacity-development opportunities, leads outreach and onboarding, supports member efforts, and coordinates with members on US peaks.
The Member Engagement Officer will be called on to provide strategic inputs and – as with all team members – some administrative support.
In practice this role is likely to focus on:
● Providing responsive and strategic movement engagement, capacity development, and
facilitation (including developing ways the movement can self sustain)
● Targeted work linked to priority work in the US, including developing new alliances
● Salary and type: Fixed Term, Full time (40 hours/week). $60,000 – $70,000 depending on experience and location
● Location: Remote work
● Flexibility: Flexible working hours are required
● As this role works across time zones, working hours will frequently be outside of normal office hours. This includes work on weekends.
● Some domestic and international travel may be required. Full COVID-19 vaccination required for employees that travel and attend meetings for BFFP [as outlined by our fiscal sponsor, GAIA].
● Reports to BFFP US Coordinator
● Direct line manager for US Operations Intern
● This role may have additional supervisory responsibilities for consultants and third party suppliers as delegated
● Develops and supports the implementation of integrated engagement and organizing strategies to achieve BFFP’s objectives for the US and Canada.
● Provides comprehensive support to members with a focus on movement building and engagement. This includes: (a) organizing participation in global peak projects, (b) maintaining strong movement relationships, (c) alliance-building, (d) advising on and implementation of BFFP US Strategies and plans. The officer also develops and maintains the infrastructure needed to be able to provide strong members’ support, as well as facilitates member participation in campaign and project work.
● With the BFFP US team, the officer ensures that the BFFP Values are put into action and that radical inclusion, Jemez principles, and diversity, equity and inclusion are integrated into all meetings, collaborations, and joint project spaces.
● Works closely with the BFFP US Members, BFFP US Team and counterparts throughout the world.
The BFFP movement has over 170 core member organizations working throughout the United
States and a few members working in Canada.
1. Supports the BFFP US Core Members through:
1.1Engaging the existing individual core member organizations
1.2 Developing and supporting capacity building initiatives including
○ Developing and maintaining the resource hub (toolkits, resource development, compiling resources produced by members)
○ Identifying needs, managing and providing support to capacity building programs including workshops, training, and BFFP US meetings
○ Supporting the micro funds program (eg recommendations and administration).
1.3 Communications, working with the BFFP US Coordination Team:
○ Draft and track regular communication products with members (e.g. monthly email, help identify stories for digital channels)
○ Supporting the speaking engagement program (e.g. organizing logistics including stipends)
○ Responding to members’ queries and requests, in consultation with the BFFP US Coordination team.
2. Builds the BFFP US Movement, aligned to strategy and plans
2.1 With the BFFP US Coordinator and Operations Intern:
○ Identify and recruit nonprofit organizations to join and become engaged in the
○ Onboard new members into the movement with the global team and US vetting
team and make introductions to the working group leads where appropriate.
○ Engage with associate members and supporters for key campaign moments
○ Responds to (questions and concerns) from outside groups, organizations, and
movements who request to partner with US movement
2.2 Facilitates the implementation of US BFFP strategies and projects, through member
engagement and growth
○ Provide support to existing and new member-led working groups and joint
○ Translate and support the implementation of global campaigning in the US, as
appropriate to members and BFFP US strategies
○ Facilitate from the Movement (often with short timelines) and provide strategic
advice (campaigning and movement organizing) to the BFFP US Coordinator,
aligned with achieving the global and national strategy
3. Creates, maintains and reports on ways to facilitate BFFP US Movement participation
3.1Organize planned forums and needs for peak participation, from meeting logistics to
supporting participation in peak events.
3.2 Ensure strong documentation and records of members projects, support, and activities
○ Maintain the directory (internal and members), member logs, resource hub,
action alerts, and resources database up to date.
○ Maintain accurate member lists, contact persons, and information across
databases and in conjunction with global member lists.
4. Contribute to a team
4.1 Provide project management support to the BFFP US Coordinator
4.2 Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting
○ Maintain records for membership activities and Movement building needs, including collating analytics and metrics, through the members’ logs and Grant’s Key Performance Indicators.
○ Oversee third-party contractors depending on projects (i.e. venue contractors, event organizers)
○ Manage the operational budget as assigned (e.g. Speaking Engagement Budget).
○ Provide regular updates and analysis from the US to the US Coordinator
4.3 Identify opportunities for BFFP US
○ Funding opportunities
○ Campaigning opportunities
○ Help identify and “pitch” US member stories with the US Comms Officer
4.4 Participate in various BFFP meetings and working groups.
4.5 Other duties as agreed with the US BFFP Coordinator
● Strong coordination and documentation tools allow for streamlined members’ engagement and support members’ networks to self-organize. Regular communications including publications (e.g. monthly recap, email lists, working group calls, etc) and responses to membership queries happen on schedule, and to a high quality.
● Specific grassroots needs are reflected in movement engagement and capacity building plans – with BFFP US members involved in, and actively leading initiatives aligned with the US and global strategies.
● BFFP US’s growth includes specific alliances (e.g. labor, immigrants’ rights, climate, and youth) built for key campaigning strategies. There is a significant increase year on year in BFFP US Members participation in key strategic peaks.
● A clear calendar of members activities and participation is mapped; Tools to support local organizing are regularly produced (factsheets, infographics, webinars/trainings, skills development); at least 3 capacity building initiatives have been implemented and the micro funds and stipend program is rolled out to support members (specific moments).
● Members have a clear understanding of how decisions with BFFP US are made; their roles in the movement and the mechanisms available to support their participation.
● BFFP US Team collaborates and co-creates with the movement and the global teams.
● There is strong participation and leadership from grassroots and EJ members.
● Minimum of 5 years experience of effective community organizing (organizer, mobilizer or in an engagement role, in a paid or voluntary capacity.
○ Experience in network development, coalition building and/or within people’s movements, or within the NGO environment.
○ A strong understanding and knowledge of, and contacts/networks within US Movements, within the environmental justice movement preferred, and ideally within Break Free From Plastic.
○ Campaigning (including lobbying and policy work) experience at a national level, in particular in participatory and inclusive campaign design, and/or in issues (petrochem, corporate campaigning, narrative shifts, and zero waste) experiences
○ Experience in capacity building, training and developing materials to support this.
● Demonstrated ability to turn projects around in a timely manner, maintain attention to detail, and adhere to deadlines;
○ Ability to think quickly and clearly, and confident in making quick and sound decisions as needed
○ Able to respond to real-world events and opportunities that affect our strategy objectives, while not losing track of long-term strategy.
● Exceptional organization and communications skills including written English language
○ Proven ability to manage relationships, including conflict management experience
○ Demonstrated capacity for the issue and audience analysis, strong presentation and persuasion skills including advanced skills in communicating complex issues;
○ Computer literate, and experienced with new media technologies, online organizational tools, and social networking tools, including those used by BFFP in the US and Canada.
● Passion for social and environmental justice, and a commitment to communications strategies which elevate the work of our grassroots membership and create a space for communities to speak for themselves
● Experience working in remote/ distance-based teams.
● Ability to speak or write in other languages.
● Bachelor’s degree in related field
● Collaborative team-player with strong interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated experience in working with people from different cultures and nationalities
