In El Salvador, plastic is everywhere: in shopping, homes, and farmlands, but also on the streets and in storm drains, where it accumulates when the rains come. In the face of a “use-and-dispose” culture, the Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technology (CESTA in Spaish)—the country’s first environmental organization—has spent more than two decades promoting a different approach to waste management and, for the past ten years, has been linking that effort to the global Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) movement.

Ahead of the anticipated resumption of negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty, Julio Cordano, Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution, shared an informal reference document titled "Aid to Negotiations." In response, members of the Break Free From Plastic movement have denounced the Chair's text, citing weak, watered-down measures.
