Break Free From Plastic is holding a conference on February 7-8, 2020 for students and administrators to find out what they could do to go plastic- free and move their schools away from single-use plastic.

Young Grguras

Post-landfill Action Network

Young has lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA all their life. When they started university, they got heavily involved with sustainability on campus. They worked in the sustainability department and organized the fossil fuel divestment campaign there. Currently, they organize with The Post-landfill Action Network, providing advice and expertise about campus sustainability. They love chatting about environmental justice, cats, and food.

Isadora Bertoli

UFSC Sem Plastico Brazil

Unhappy with the culture of waste, Isadora Bertoli is one of the founders of the Plastic Free Federal University of Santa Catarina project (UFSC Plastic Free), a successful project created to inspire, empower and co-create a Zero Waste Campus, by empowering and creating solutions along with the students, the coffee shops, Institution and entire university community to take action towards a more sustainable University.

She is also one of the coordinators of Zero Waste Youth International Organization. The ZWY is an international and independent movement, organized by young people and focused on connecting and empowering our generation towards a more sustainable world through Zero Waste ideas and practices. She believes becoming zero waste is a political, sustainable and required act towards a better future.  

Mark Paitan

Silliman University

Mark is a highly-accomplished student-leader from Dumaguete. He is currently a 1st Year BS Mechanical Engineering student at Silliman University. As a college student, he also helps the university as the Projects Manager of the Student Government Environment Committee and as a member of the University’s Zero Waste/Waste Management Committee. He works to help the community around him as the Youth Coordinator for War on Waste-Break Free From Plastic Negros Oriental and Convenor of the Zero Waste Youth Negros Oriental, by working with different schools/universities to go plastic-free and eventually, zero waste. He was also the Event Director of the recently held Zero Waste Youth Convergence at Dumaguete, where different youth and student leaders from Metro Dumaguete and Siquijor gathered to learn about zero waste, discuss appropriate actions/solutions, and build a youth network. With his advocacy, he hopes to empower the youth and local communities to become more environment-friendly, especially with the issue on plastic waste.

Alexandria Gordon

Eckerd College

Alex Gordon (She/Her/Hers), is a current sophomore at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA majoring in Environmental Studies and Political Science. She is the current Break Free From Plastics Campaign Coordinator with the Florida Student Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Chapter at Eckerd College. In 2019, she was successful in leading the effort to get her College to sign the Break Free From Plastics Pledge, committing Eckerd to end College spending on all single-use plastic items! For her effort, Alex was a recipient of the Emerging Leader Award given by the Post Landfill Action Network. When she has spare time, Alex loves registering people to vote, reading dystopian novels, and finding fun zero waste alternatives to use!

Tiara Samson

Break Free From Plastic

Tiara is the Plastic-free Campus Coordinator of the Break Free From Plastic Movement, where she works with organizations, individuals, and schools from around the world to help them move away from single-use plastics and assist them in implementing alternative systems.
