All over the world, young people are leading their communities’ journeys to a cleaner and greener world. It starts with making the promise to join others in reducing plastic consumption and working to ban single-use plastics in our community.

I, ____________(NAME), a ____________(YOUR YEAR LEVEL AND COURSE IF
APPLICABLE)
student at ____________ (SCHOOL/UNIVERSITY) in ____________(TOWN/CITY, COUNTRY) urge my school/university to
Break Free From Plastic*.

By signing this petition as an individual, I recognize the following:

While individual actions to reduce the use of single-use plastic—like using a reusable container—are important, systemic and institutional change is needed to achieve true and lasting solutions to the plastic pollution crisis.

Educational institutions play a key role in developing responsible citizens who will take the lead in bringing about the systems change necessary to end plastic pollution.

1. Plastic is made out of fossil fuels, which increase climate
change at every stage of their life cycle from extraction, refinement, transportation, and end of use that bring about catastrophic effects.
2. The negative environmental effects of plastic production
disproportionately affect different populations unequally.
3. The existence of false solutions and greenwashing, such as waste to energy solutions, plastic bricks and roads, and more.
4. The solution to this crisis is ultimately reducing the production and use of plastics, and shifting the narrative
away from single-use items in general;

Educational institutions are made to prepare young people for the future. I petition my school to support systems that are sustainable, and to ensure that these systems do not put that very future in jeopardy.

I know that single-use plastic cannot be a part of the future. My institution needs to recognize this and act now.
